1. How do I know if a stair lift will work in my home?
Stair lifts are practical, affordable home mobility products for many situations. Some of the things you should consider include the condition of your stairs. Are they in sound condition? The rail for the stair lift is mounted to the stair treads, not the wall, so the condition of the stairs themselves is very important.
Other important factors are the tops and bottoms of stairs, and landings between floors. Are they well lit? Is there adequate space for a safe transfer as one gets on or off of the stair lift?
The height and weight of a user are important considerations in determining the feasibility of a stair lift. For instance, a user’s leg length and the stair width affect the space required for the stair chair lift.
Users with back pain needing soft starts and stops of the lift may require stair lifts powered by direct current (DC Battery). Most stair lifts today are AC powered from a typical wall socket, with built in rectifiers that convert the AC to DC to keep the batteries charged at all times.
Professional installation of stair lifts is important for safety, comfort and correct installation.
2. Is there a lot of construction required to install a stair lift?
We prepare the stair lift in our shop prior to installation in the home. Little to no modifications are required in the home.
3. How long will it take to install?
Higher Mobility offers fast, same day service for stair lift sales and installation. Typically, stair lifts are installed in about 4 to 8 hours.
4. What kind of service does Higher Mobility provide after you install a stair lift?
For the first year after installation there is no charge for parts or labor, which are covered under the factory warranty. After the first year we offer service agreements that include several visits a year to inspect the equipment and ensure that it continues to work properly.
5. Will my insurance cover the cost of the equipment and installation?
Unfortunately, many insurance providers don’t view home lifts and elevators as health care essentials, but many insurance plans cover some of the costs of installation and equipment. If you are a veteran, the VA does provide coverage for some home modifications for mobility equipment. Learn more at http://www.va.gov/.
6. What should I look for when selecting a stair lift and installer?
First and always, with any contractor, ask for a certificate of insurance. Next, ask that they provide you with a copy of their Contractors License or Registration. Finally ask for three references that have had stair lifts installed within the last three months. Don’t buy into “pressure situations”. Any provider who you feel is pressuring you or wanting you to make a decision today usually is charging too much and doesn’t want you to shop around.
You don’t necessarily have to purchase the least expensive unit but it gives you a chance to compare companies and services and most times will allow you to find a contractor you are comfortable with and trust. Contact us to schedule a free consultation and assessment of your situation and needs.
7. What if my stairs aren’t a straight run (have a landing between floors or are curved)?
Every situation is different and each stair case unique. A good stair lift contractor will have a product to fit each situation. Higher Mobility sells ThyssenKrupp Access stair lift products, a manufacturer that specializes in curved stair lifts, and narrow stair conditions. All ThyssenKrupp Access stair lifts are manufactured in the US. Learn more about ThyssenKrupp Access.
