1. What are lift systems?

Lift systems are types of mobility equipment that include ceiling track lifts, bath lifts, and floor lifts. Lift systems make it easier for people with disabilities to move about the home. They also protect healthcare professionals from injuries and the wear and tear on their body that can result from the labor-intensive efforts of care.

 2. What is a ceiling track lift?

A ceiling track lift is a system that provides mobility throughout a home. The user or patient is supported in a seated or a walking position in a sling attached to a rail system mounted on the ceiling.

Ceiling track lifts make it easier for immobile and mobility challenged individuals to move about their home. For example, the tracks can run from the bed to the bathroom next to the commode, over the bathtub, and to other rooms.

Ceiling track lifts are relatively easy and quickly installed, very easy to use and operate, and accommodate a variety of home environments and patient needs. Manual and power-based models are available.

3. How do I know if a ceiling track lift will work in my home?

In general, the requirements are a rigid ceiling (must have a framework above it); no more than 24 inches between the trusses in the ceiling; the ceiling must be made of wood or sheet rock at least one-half inch thick; and the ceiling height is between seven and nine feet. At Higher Mobility, we also offer what is known as an X,Y installation which is a basic square track system with four posts holding it up. The posts mount to the wall and the unit travels forward, reverse, left and right within the square frame. This type system is ideal for use by a homeowner who needs to transfer from a bed to wheelchair.

4. Is there a lot of construction required to install a ceiling track lift?

No. The overhead lift system can be installed directly in the ceiling in your home or can use supporting legs.

5. How long will it take to install?

Ceiling lift systems can be installed quickly, sometimes in a single day. However, often there is some home modification required, so plan on three or four days on average.

6. Are ceiling track lift systems completely safe? What happens if there’s a loss of electrical power in the house?

Yes, when used properly, ceiling track systems are safe both for the user and the caregiver. Some systems are manually powered, and electrically powered ones can be moved manually if the power fails. In some systems, an automatic return to charge provides a great way to make sure the unit is always ready for use.  Also, some systems have a “constant charge” track that allows for charging of the battery at any point along the length of the track. Other options include infrared cordless controls and pre-positioning programs.

9. Will my insurance cover the cost of the equipment and installation?

Yes, a ceiling track may be covered by an insurance company. First, it must be deemed medically necessary by a physician. Next, insurance companies require that it be operated by a caregiver, not the patient. Once pre-qualified, most insurance companies will cover up to a maximum of $7,000.00
