1. How do I know if an elevator will work in my home?
Home elevators add affordable style and functional convenience to new or existing homes. There are design options to match your home décor and assure low noise, minimal space requirements, and energy efficiency.
You don’t need a lot of floors in your home to use an elevator. Even a home with just two floors can use an elevator, without a shaft, which minimizes installation costs. For homes with more than two floors, there are several choices at a range of prices, and with various design options, as well as a wide choice of interiors details, door styles – including pocket doors – wood and other finishes, and shaft materials.
Higher Mobility sells and installs home elevators designed, engineered, and manufactured in the US by one of the world’s leading lift and elevator companies, ThyssenKrupp Access.
The only way to know for sure whether your house can be fitted with a residential elevator is to have a professional consultation. Higher Mobility offers a free consultation during which we’ll in discuss your particular needs, inspect your home, and provide you with a professional recommendation for the best equipment solution to increase your home mobility. 2. Is there a lot of construction required to install a home elevator?
The amount of construction necessary depends on the layout and construction materials of your house and the type of residential elevator you select. For example, a hydraulic elevator uses a cylinder and piston to raise and lower the elevator cab, and requires a machinery room to house the hydraulic power unit. A traction elevator, on the other hand, uses wires, and a counterbalance does not. Some home elevators have a rigid guide rail system that can be installed into a wood framed house, so block walls and backing plates are not required.
3. How long will it take to install?
Again, the type of elevator and the configuration of the home determine the time required for installation. For a two-story elevator with no shaft, you might allow for 7 to 10 days for installation.
4. What kind of service does Higher Mobility provide after installation of a home elevator?
For the first three years after installation there is no charge for parts or labor covered under the factory warranty. After that we offer service agreements that provide several visits and inspections per year. Learn more about our services.
5. Will my insurance cover the cost of the equipment and installation?
Unfortunately, many insurance providers don’t view residential elevators as health care essentials, but many insurance plans cover some of the costs of installation and equipment. If you are a veteran, the VA does provide coverage for some home modifications for mobility equipment. Learn more at http://www.va.gov/.
Also, depending on the percentage of your income you spend on medical costs, you may be able to deduct some of the cost of a residential elevator from your federal income taxes. (You should consult an accountant about whether you qualify for such a deduction.)
6. Are residential elevators completely safe? What happens if there’s a loss of electrical power in the house?
Safety systems such as locks on shaft access doors, fall arrestors, and emergency phones assure safety in the event of malfunction. We install residential elevators with backup batteries so the elevator will function if the power goes out. As with all machinery extreme caution and safety must be explained and exercised to small children and young adults.
The selection and installation of a home elevator takes time and consideration, and should be facilitated by a knowledgeable professional who will help you select the right product, customize it to your tastes and your budget, and manage the installation process.
