1. What is a dumbwaiter, and how can it help me?
Dumbwaiters are small freight elevators (or lifts) intended to carry objects between floors. In private homes, the lifts frequently terminate in a kitchen.
Thomas Jefferson used one of the world’s first dumbwaiters in his mountain home at Monticello, Virginia, to limit the number of servants around the table to one, so that his guests could enjoy more of the view. He is credited by some as its inventor.
Today, dumbwaiters lift the stuff of life—laundry, groceries, books, meals, packages, tools, and more. Dumbwaiters are a lifesaver for your back, especially for labor-intensive work, or for caring for someone who lacks mobility. Higher Mobility offers three different options for car size and a lifting capacity to 200 pounds.
2. How do I know if a dumbwaiter will work in my home?
Dumbwaiters work in most homes. They are quickly and easily installed. To be sure your house can be fitted with a dumbwaiter, call us for a free consultation: 1-888-662-5489.
3. Is there a lot of construction required to install a dumbwaiter?
Not at all. Most dumbwaiters today are constructed as modular systems that basically snap in place once a shaft or hoistway has been built.
4. How long will it take to install?
The type of dumbwaiter and the configuration of your home determine the time required for installation. For a two-story dumbwaiter, you might allow for 2 days to 1 week for installation.
5. What kind of service does Higher Mobility provide after installation of a dumbwaiter?
For the first year after installation there is no charge for parts or labor covered under the factory warranty. After the first year we offer service agreements that cover several visits and inspections per year.
6. How much do dumbwaiters cost?
The price range depends on the model of dumbwaiter installed and the number of floors served. The options and prices would be discussed with you during our free home consultation.
7. Will my insurance cover the cost of the equipment and installation?
No. Dumbwaiters are considered a luxury item by insurance companies.
8. Are dumbwaiters completely safe? What happens if there’s a loss of electrical power in the house?
Yes. The doors are locked when in use and the unit cannot be operated from the inside. As with all machinery extreme caution and safety must be explained and exercised to small children and young adults.
